I'll try that, but I'm not running gdm or xdm or anything, I just log
in from the console and run startx.

Actually, I think I've tried that before, but I will give it another
go.  I seem to recall a problem with having two users share the same X
connection.  I may have to do something with permissions somewhere
that I'm not quite sure of.
