I run eeebuntu (http://www.eeebuntu.org/) on my eee pc. Runs a little slow on the 700 series, because it runs Compiz by default, but it works really well.
As for your other issue, try running 'apt-get update' on the command line and see if you get any errors. If not, try installing your piece of software using apt and see what happens. Jesse
