It should be noted that the reason I build my own kernels is mainly for
the wireless driver update.  I put an Intel iwl4965 (802.11 a/g/n) in my
Aspire one to replace the 802.11b/g device that it came with.  I am a
big fan of 802.11a

So the answer your question, Ubuntu 8.10 should work out of the box.
Ubuntu 9.04 should be even better.

sudo apt-get remove <name of package>
The GUI based front ends also have remove options.

You will need to import the PGP keys as the debian multimedia packages
are signed.  IMO, I would stay away from a distro that does not sign its
packages.

To import the PGP keys, do the following:

sudo gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.eu.pgp.net --recv-keys 07DC563D1F41B907
sudo gpg --armor --export 07DC563D1F41B907 | apt-key add -

Then rerun apt-get update
