Hi Gustin, Thanks for the tip. The flashdrive is vfat, which seems appropriate because I often transfer file to and from machines running Windows XP.
I couldn't make fsck.vfat -r -t -V /dev/<usb device> work because I couldn't figure out which of the 5 usbdev*.* in /dev was the one to check.
