I haven't looked into email servers for a while so I may be wrong on this...
Squirrel is a front end to the mail system. The actual mail is either
stored as POP3 or IMAP. Seeing as Squirrel is just a front end, this
means the mail resides on the servers. So, in theory, if you set up the
same system on your end you can just rsync the pertinent directories -
via FTP, SSH, or whatever. Just make sure you maintain or reset the
file permissions properly.
Another alternative is to us a mail client to do the backup. There is a
plugin for ThunderBird for this exact purpose - though I don't recall
the name off hand. Actually there are more than one. I've used it in
the past to backup all my mail via IMAP to my local box, then restored
from the local box to a hosted server (again via IMAP). It was
essentially a drag/drop operation.
In that sense, you can just set up ThunderBird or the mail client of
your choice, connect via IMAP (so you do remove mail from the servers)
to both servers, then drag/drop a copy to the other folder. A little
time consuming but safe and easy.
BTW - all email should be over an encrypted line for security purposes,
so POP3S or IMAPS...
