My personal experience is that taking notes during class was very
beificial.  Of course taking notes is not the same thing as simply
writing down everything the prof/teacher says.  Going over them later
with a highlighter or distilling the important parts was also useful.

If I had the time I would sometimes type up the distilled notes, but
with a full class load that was rarely the case.

Just my own experiences and not scientific at all.
