I've FedEx'd a couple of drives between Calgary, Toronto, San Franscisco & Switzerland. I took no special measures to protect the drive beyond some basic packing: Wrap drive in bubble wrap. Enclose that in a few sheets of folded 8.5x11 copier paper, rotate 90degrees and enclose in another few pages of folded copier paper. Tape shut, and ship.
