OK, I will bite. I have this Office Depot branded USB thingy on my
desk. Lets plug it in to my Windows box. Hmm, it looks like some sort
of networking interface but it is asking for a disk. I can't see a disk
on my desk. Not a lot of really interesting info on the USB device to
google for this driver thing.

Lets plug it in to my Linux laptop... less than 10 seconds later I have
a wireless adaptor that is ready to rock and roll.

dmesg even tells me the chipset of this thing so I can now download
drivers for my Windows computer... oh wait, most "average users" do not
know how to do either. Which reminds me, my Dad needs help with a new
printer that he just bought, it works with his Linux machine but he is
having troubles when he boots into windows. It seems the CD with
drivers do not have Vista versions... weird he just bought this thing a
week ago...

Also, there is an open invitation to hardware manufacturers to have
drivers written for them, even under an NDA. Greg Kroah-Hartman is the
guy leading the charge here. If there are no Linux drivers, the only
blame is with the hardware manufacturer.

One final note, buying random hardware is dumb, I don't care what OS you
are using.
