When I was looking at mdeia players, I looked at the Sansa. A little research showed some issues though (you mentioned most the ones I saw). I opted for the Phillips GoGear 8GB which was right beside the Sansa's on the shelf, AND was a good deal cheaper ($80 versus $120 for the same storage). I have only lightly used the GoGear, but have not seen the issues you mentioned. I can loan you mine if you want a trial run...
