Is the array hosting the root partition?

I would boot with a rescue disk that supports software RAID (I am a big
fan of systemrescuecd), and use it to ensure that the array is healthy.
 It is possible that there are some errors that need to be sorted out first.

There are a number of things that could be going wrong, I guess I would
need more information to be of more help.
