I am assuming these are the CD images you used?

I am personally a fan of the netinst CDs
http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst

I just download what I need once it is done. I have not actually used
the full install CD, probably ever. What you probably need to do is
install kde-full, and kdm via apt-get/aptitude/synaptic etc.

If you need a small footprint install or are installing to compact flash
you may wish to check out voyage linux, a debian derivative.
