I am personally a fan of the netinst CDs http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst I just download what I need once it is done. I have not actually used the full install CD, probably ever. What you probably need to do is install kde-full, and kdm via apt-get/aptitude/synaptic etc. If you need a small footprint install or are installing to compact flash you may wish to check out voyage linux, a debian derivative.
