Hi Robin,
There is probably a problem with the X video driver locking up with your
ATI card.

I would suggest that you will want to get the 'official'(non-free) ATI
drivers, which can be got through the restricted driver manager.... which
unfortunately is a graphical app (chicken and egg problem).

You can force X to use the VESA driver (just to get something working) by
editing the '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' file and adding/changing the following
section and then install the ATI drivers.
