I just spent about $500 at Memory Express. What I got for that was:
- Intel Core 2 Quad 8200 CPU (I think the model is right)
- An Asus Motherboard (P5QL-EM) (onboard sound/video/lan)
- 4 GB of RAM
- A cheap Velocity case, with a 500W power supply.
If I had gone with 2 GB RAM instead, the price tag would have been
approx $460.
If you were to go with one of the Duo Core CPUs you can spend less even.
Or look at the AMD chips which seem to always be a little cheaper.
Though Intel has the edge on most bang for the buck these days, I believe.
An optical drive can be had for under $30.
A monitor would not fit easily into a $500 budget. But you can pick up
old CRTs for under $20 these days.
To build a new box, I usually start with MemEx's System Configurator
screen (http://www.memoryexpress.com/SystemConfig/Default.aspx). From
there I can browse the core items I'm interested in and filter remaining
options based on what I picked. (i.e. if you picked an AM2 based CPU,
you will only see AM2 compatible motherboards listed). I normally have
two tabs open - one for the system configurator, and one for research.
When I find a possible candidate in the configurator, I pull up the
specs on the other tab and check to see if it meets my needs. I only
pick items I know I need, leaving others unset resulting in zero dollars...
When I'm all said and done, the price tag for the items is at the bottom
of the configurator page.
Hope that helps.

I'm sorry, I should have mentioned budget. I will be looking at
something closer to $500 for a box.
Where would be a good place to shop/brands?
I'm also looking at going to someplace like Memory Express.
Can someone suggest someparts. The last time I looked at computers
it was P4.
Will need everything, including a dvd burner, probabably onboard sound
and video.
Thanks
