Find the model number of the computer, or the components involved (video card/chipset, network card, etc.). Then punch that into Google followed by the word "Linux". i.e. "Asus P5QL-EM Linux" (for my motherboard)

What you are looking for is trouble reports. The more you see, and/or the more critical they seem, the more you probably want to look at another device/system.

Careful though. It is common to see reports when the device works fine, but the user may not have it configured right - the various posts *should* highlight this.

Also, be conscious of the dates of the posts. If there were a lot of trouble reports 3+ years ago, but none since then, then the device/system was likely handled in a later version of the kernel or distro's.

There are various hardware lists out there too. I don't know any links off the top of my head though.

HTH.

How do I know if a computer or parts will work with Linux?
It's alright if I can take a computer home and try it out, but
what if I want to order something online or buy used. How
do I check it out?
Thanks
