Friends,
Here is a story that may come back and bit me five years from know:
A couple of night ago I watched my ten year-old son hack into his
sister's computer and unceremoniously crash a Firefox session so that
she would not score more points than him on an online game. Although he
should have been grounded, I could not help but feel a bit of pride at
my son taking his first step into the dark side...Oh, yes. My ten year
old son is now a hacker :-)
First he social engineered his sister so that she divulged her password,
then he ssh'd into her system and gained root access (sorry, I cannot
tell you how he did that. I don't even know how he found out the port
sshd was listening to.),
then he issued ps command with the ax switch and piped the output into
grep, looking for firefox
Once he had the right process ID, he just killed it...just like that.
Two seconds later we all heard his sister yelling from her bedroom:
"...Hey! what did you do to my computer??!!!.."
Although this is by no means a Mitnick-worthy hack, it nevertheless gave
me a bit of pride to see my son applying his knowledge, even if for
personal gain.
All the computers involved were running a GNU/Linux distro.
Oh, I forgot...He did get grounded for two days :-)
