I just had an interesting (and annoying) experience setting up a dual boot Ubuntu9.04/Win7 box. For years I've had a WinXP/Ubuntu system which worked fine. Windows was installed 1st, then Ubuntu and all was well. If I reinstalled WinXP, a restore of grub brought everything back to normal. I installed Win7 by wiping the C (sda1) drive and as expected the Windows boot manager was installed and the Linux system became invisible at boot up. After a few days of checking out and customizing Windows 7 I tried to restore grub from the Ubuntu live DVD . It seemed to work fine and I got the grub menu on next boot, and could boot Ubuntu. However whenever I selected the Windows startup, grub would pop back to the grub menu. I googled around and it seems this is quite a common problem but there didn't seem to be a definitive resolution. The most promising one seemed to be to install grub on the Linux partition, restore Win 7 boot manager, and use other tools to make it boot the Linux system. Upon rebooting from the Win7 DVD to repair the Windows install, the repair tool could not see the NTFS partition or the Windows image. It accepted a repair command anyway, did something, and said to reboot. Upon reboot the std grub menu appeared and this time the Windows selection worked (thankfully). There is something different in Win7 - I think grub may have corrupted the Windows boot image. So I'm back to normal after wasting a few hours. Grub loads either OS as before. Has anyone else seen this? Ubuntu 9.04 uses Grub as opposed to grub2. Does grub2 work better wirh Win7? Greg
