Hello Gustin and all those who helped, I added psmouse to my blacklist file and now my lap top does not respond to the mouse pad, just as I wanted, and the optical mouse still works.
Thanks for all your help. Now I can type on my lap top without fear of accidentally touching the mouse pad. I am running Debian Etch on my lap top, not Ubuntu, but your suggestion still worked.
