In day to day use, most people would not notice the difference. The vast
majority of web sites have per connection throttles that are far below the
15 mbit this connection is capable of.
If you are able to take advantage of the additional bandwidth, it is
impossible to go back.
I think the speed comes from the fact that it's inside Shaw's network and
therefore skipping (some of??) the rate limiting and is the raw speed that
the cable can handle at that point in time.
Actually, I also get these speeds from the giganews usenet server. To be
fair giganews peers directly with Shaw, but they are still outside of the
Shaw network. Also, this was subjected to the traffic shaping that I do
on my own router. With those rules disabled the connection we have bursts
up to 25 mbit (shaw has some marketing term for this but it is simply part of their
shaping rules).
I have at one time or another used nearly every broadband provider in the
Calgary region (including a couple of fixed wireless providers) and will
be sticking with Shaw until I get fiber to the home (which will probably
be Shaw anyway).
