I picked myself up a good entry level Intel unit from Memory Express in
October and another one for a client in November of last year.

CPU: E5220
4 port hardware raid 3Ware
4x 1TB Hitachi SATA drives
2x 80GB Hitachi SATA drives
6 port Hot Swap cage
3x2GB sticks of DDR3 ECC
Intel chassis
Intel motherboard
Dual power supply
Remote management board

No rack mount kit on this unit, but it's available.

Right now I'm running at about 1/4 of what the box is capable of for CPU
and RAM: It can easily take another quad core CPU or upgrade to the
Xeon octo cores when they come out and the RAM is upgradeable with
another 3 sets of 2x3GB DDR3 kits - or go bigger if you like.

It's been a great unit - my daily workhorse. I'm currently running it as
a multi-purpose development & production box with between 15 and 25
Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Centos, and PFSense virtual machines at any one
time. Some workstations with graphical interface, some headless
servers...

All told, it was around $4k including 4 years of IPR on all parts. I
picked this one up after finding it was roughly equivalent to an $8k
Dell, $11k HP, and a $13k IBM pre-built. I could have gone with a 2500
dollar desktop quad core with 12 GB of DDR3, but I wanted the
upgradeability of the server system, didn't care if I had 3D graphics,
4 port hardware raid card, etc...

Let me know if you're interested, I can pull up the specs. Prices will
of course have changed since I bought it, but they shouldn't be too far
off.
