Amarok for example lives under here, including all of my cached
podcasts (some of the music based ones I actually want to listen to
more than once).

Amen to that.  I would not delete any of the dot-files in the home
directory unless you were solving a specific problem.  .vimrc,
.screenrc, and .bashrc are the first things I copy *in* to a new
install.
