That changed the error to:

Error openning data file /usr/local/share/tessdata/eng.traineddata

now I go looking for /usr/local/share/tessdata/eng.traineddata and it isn't 
there. I did a file search for eng.* and didn't find it in any other location.

I might create an empty file and see what happens. I'll do that a little later 
as I have to be away for an hour or so.
