Only half of the key pair would have been uploaded (the half
designated as the public key). The private key would have been on
your computer.

I still maintain a couple of keys, in fact you have to do this for
Debian and Ubuntu packaging (something I have been meaning to get back
in to). It seems that email signing never really caught on, and I am
now addicted to the gmail priority inbox interface. There is no
signing in Gmail and as much as I am a google fan boy, I would never
send them my private key.

The web of trust part also never took off. I usually end up
confirming the fingerprint via a phone call for those rare cases where
verification is important (I have had to do this maybe 3 times in a
decade).

You can search for public keys using the following syntax:
gpg --keyserver pgp.mit.edu --search-keys <key search terms, could be
email address or name>

kgpg is a pretty good GUI front end for gpg.

Try these example searches:
gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.us.pgp.net --search-keys [email protected]
gpg --keyserver wwwkeys.us.pgp.net --search-keys gustin
