Apologies in advance to anyone who feels this forum in inappropriate
for this posting.

I haven't found work since moving to Calgary two years ago. My efforts though
job web sites, employment adjacencies, and networking have been an enormous
wasted effort; two informal interviews in two years with neither
resulting in any
prospect of being hired.  The last was for a Smalltalk position;
despite my having
over five years experience with Smalltalk the company opted to hire a new grad
without Smalltalk experience. To be fair, they were originally
looking for a new
grad and I couldn't redirect that ship.

Getting desperate now I posted the following ad on Kijiji on Jan 22:

Software developer with advanced degree and many years of experience.
Willing to work for $10/hr. Familiar with C, Java, and especially Smalltalk.
Also familiar with Linux and know a little shell scripting (bash).
Strong theoretical background especially in algorithms (I have published
in this area) and compilers. Also have a solid background in Physics and
Mathematics, especially Graph Theory, Combinatorics, and Calculus.
Computer generated test cases a specialty.
Sorry, I don't do Windows and I only do web development if it is using Seaside.
Contact at: [email protected]

So far 67 people have read the ad of which one contacted me. Unfortunately
(s)he opted to hire someone else.

I recently talked with a woman at Alberta Works. After viewing my resume and
talking with me she recommended that I give up software development and do
something else such as Accounting. I give her some credit; not many people
would have the nerve to look someone with a Ph.D. in Computer Science in the
eye and tell him/her to to Accounting.
I responded that I would rather live under a bridge.
Whether or not I meant it may soon be determined.

Does anybody have suggestions as to what my next step should be?

So far the best I can come up with is to get a sign saying

                       "WILL PROGRAM FOR FOOD"

and stand with it at downtown C-train stations.

Are some C-train stations better for this kind of thing than others?

Can anybody recommend good locations other than C-train stations?

Is anyone interested in sharing my sign?

Should I put on my sign that I "don't do Windows"?

Feel free to redistribute this post anywhere you like and especially
to companies
that keep telling the government that they cannot find enough suitable High Tech
workers and need to hire from offshore.

Regards,

(Dr. for what it's worth) Ralph (Rocky) Boland
