In fact kept bees for many years in and around Edmonton and sold all the honey from my from door in town. Our house became known as the Honey for Sale house. In all those years we only had one perv come to the door looking for "A Honey". The Bee Business is a large industry in Alberta and the honey is valued for its clear light color and mild flavor. It as been said that honey marketing companies use it to extend and improve the heavier darker honeys that come from trees, buckwheat etc. There is much scientific work done in AB concerning honey production, and much of this is done in the Grand Prairie region. Can you keep bees in Calgary? Yes is the answer and the Calgary Horticultural Society is giving courses on the How To. I have found that the bees do well until folks start using pesticides on their flowers, then the colony will dwindle. I think the Hort Society is promoting apiculture to increase the pollinators for gardens and trees in the area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beekeeping
