Freedom to have full control of the content you want to pass to the WEB including access to your log files. This is exclusive of "free spying" that is prone to abuse. Not to mention free spying is a huge price and not really free at all.
I first heard this presented in a talk (video) Did you read the articles? I thought these ideas were in there. Then there is the cool factor of having your own servers running in hardware such as that, with better and better software that the community comes up with. What can I say? I have a vivid imagination, especially with future possibilities.
