I did try toggling the 2D and 3D accelleration options with no joy. I'm
pretty sure it comes down to the GPU on the box (which happens to be
integrated Intel). I've been considering grabbing a new video card
anyway to support dual monitors, so now I just have more reason to do so.
But, Blender has stabilized (i.e. no longer randomly crashing), so my
big push for a CAD solution has eased off a little.
BTW, would anyone want to see a demo of the 3D Printer? I could arrange
one for the next meeting...

That is my usual method as well. However this week I ran into
limitations with this. I picked up a MakerBot Replicator and want
to build some 3D models to print out with it. So I've been
experimenting with CAD packages. None of the Autodesk free options,
or Alibre work in a VM due to video driver issues. So to get these
working, I'll likely have to either jump through some hoops to get
proper 3D accelleration in a VM (doubtful), or use a native
environment with the proper video drivers (best chance of success).
I may even need to buy a "good" video card for this. I haven't
decided yet if this is worth it.
Anyways, back on topic - VMs are great, until you need modern 3D
support, or other specialized hardware support the VM does not
support. But these are rare cases, I think.
