If you were happy with your ThinkPad, here's an option. I have a lenovo E530 laptop that I bought a year and a half ago from Memory Express. It is similar to this one:
http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX46916 I run kubuntu 12.04 LTS on it and haven't had any problems. I only run linux on it as I yanked the original drive and put in a larger hybred drive before I even turned it on. I would boost the ram (max it out would be best)...appears to only come with 4GB. Battery life has been pretty good on the one I have as well.
