I have created a Xubuntu Live USB drive & have pulled the information off of the drive.  The email is IMAP so if I have to recreate...fine.  I right-clicked on the drive from the live environment & that allowed me to mount the internal drive, but I am not sure if that is what Neil was talking about.  The usb kb/mouse do work in the live environment so that confirms to me that it is something stuck in the OS.

I am doing some reading online & found that i could boot from the USB & update it to a newer OS....is that something I would want to do or will it bork things?

Hi all...recently my Dell OptiPlex 745 with Xubuntu on it won't allow me to login after booting after doing a recent update that required a restart of the machine.

I can start the machine & use the USB keyboard to access the BIOS but when it comes to the login area I cannot type anything. As well, USB mouse doesn't work.  I have tried the following (and likely a few more things as well):
* Different keyboards & mice
* Different USB ports
* No PS/2 ports so could not check that.
* Moved hard drive to different chassis.
* Reset/change BIOS settings
* Restarted multiple times
* Tried accessing command line

All of this still gets me back to the same spot.  It was recent build (likely at 17.10 as I kept up with updates) & was done from scratch (likely started as a 17.04 but can't be sure).  I am pretty sure it is the OS based on swapping the hard drive, but not sure how to fix it.  With the limited browsing access (via phone) I couldn't find much that pointed me in the right direction.  I know there was an issue recently with some lenovo devices, but that doesn't seem to apply here.

I am at the point now where I will try to spin up a USB drive to at least try to access the data on the desktop, but would like to get it running again with out having to format & start again; because the massive pain in the arse that installing applications, setting up emails, etc.  I am not sure if it is possible to run updates (that will likely fix the issue) on the installed system from a Live USB or not.

Any ideas would be welcome.
