I use Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.1 on 6 computers. I have used Linux Mint
Cinnamon 18.2 on them before. Two others have Windows 7 because there
are some specific things I need Windows for. Of the 6 Linux computers,
two are Lenovo ThinkPad laptops (1. T420 / 2. T420s). I got both my
refurbished ThinkPads from the London Drugs computer department for $350
and $300 respectively. Both work fine. I don’t remember having any
problems installing Linux on these computers. As has been said,
ThinkPads are typically Linux friendly.
Whenever I try a new Linux distro, I always download the ISO file for it
and create a Live Boot USB stick. That way I know in advance how my
computer will react to the specific distro. Only then would I actually
install the distro.
I personally don’t use Oracle VirtualBox (on my Windows 7 computer) to
test distros fully since I can’t get VirtualBox to recognize the USB
sticks I plug in. Even then, you need to install “Guest Additions”
which may or may not exist for specific Linux distros.
I would not expect stores to support Linux because:
1. All new computers they stock come with Windows already on them
because of the way Microsoft locks manufacturers into getting Windows
cheap if they put Windows on ALL the computers built.
2. Most people are familiar with Windows. Linux would puzzle them. For
example, Windows users would not want to get involved with arcane Linux
Terminal commands. They want GUIs for everything.
3. There are too many Linux distros for support staff to learn how to
set up and configure.
