I posted a few patches concerning texture compression on bugzilla:

Since the patches start to become large, I'd appreciate if more
people could test them too. So far, this suits me and effectively
reduces memory, even for hidden textures (with the "compressed"
property set). The patches apply to current trunk.
Features:
- Provides S3TC compression, even to NPOT textures
- Hidden textures are saved to system memory in their compressed
form, provided they are compressed, of course
- Minimal support for DDS data, it was mainly for debugging, and I
don't really intend to provide full DDS support. The functions are
still there though
Note: don't try to switch "compressed" states too often as the
request is honoured and the textures re-uploaded in the requested
format, i.e. quality might degrade in the long run.
