Seems I had a mixed 0.6 and 0.7 system. I removed 0.6 and rebuilt both
clutter and tidy from trunk (note I had to edit the tidy.pc.in file
changing the requirement to clutter-0.7 from clutter-0.6) and
everything now seems to work (at least not give any errors on load).

That sounds like you may have compiled Tidy using headers from a
different development version of Clutter than the one installed. It
will
probably go away if you recompile and reinstall Tidy.
