Two options I can think of for doing this; - Use a shader applied to a label (or group/fbo with a label inside to gain some padding). This of course would require supporting h/w.
- Potentially subclass the current clutter pango renderer to add shadows or potentially use pango directly (or clutter-cairo) to render text in a 'custom' i.e with shadow to a texture.
