You don't have to build Poky with the X11 backend. It will boot fine without any X11 apps (of course you'll miss the window manager, assorted apps, GTK, etc...). I guess you could always build your HMI using OpenGLES directly on the framebuffer. It would be nice to be able to used DirectFB but apparently Freescale doesn't provide a driver for that either. Freescale used to have a graphics framework called PowerParts that they sold but according to the applications engineer, they're no longer interested in supporting that.
