Thanks. I've pretty much figured it out now.

Can someone explain what clutter.Alpha does, though? I'm confused as to its 
purpose.

Look at the behaviours for example, you can rotate x, y, z axis, set actor 
depth (z axis), play with timelines, etc.

There are pyclutter examples in the tarballs. 
Other than that, reading the C API is pretty much all you need for python.
