I did something like that a few months ago: https://github.com/Ableton/aqt-cassowary/blob/master/src/CMakeLists.txt However, that's not a pattern which scales I think. It requires the host to know too much about the hosted, and could stop working in the future (cmake should maybe emit an error if the LOCATION specified in an IMPORTED target does not exist).
