Yes I'm willing to contribute time, and I'm willing to have my patches
dropped on the floor if it doesn't turn out as pretty as I think it

CMake is well structured code already, it may be a short ton rather
than a metric ton.

  

Well, seeing as how I use CMake to build Chicken Scheme, I'm interested in language-neutral backends.  However, I haven't the slightest inclination to work on this right now.  I'm just saying, if you get the CMake team's buy-in, and you achieve some results, I'd put effort into it downstream of you.  I'm imagining it'll take you 1 year to get to a point that's interesting enough for me to bother with, but then again the CMake guys have done impressive things before.

Chicken Scheme works with SWIG, BTW.  Haven't really used it for that though.
