A command-line configure is always important. Often, things are run as batch jobs, with no user intervention, not even for the setup. (This is often to exercise from-scratch builds.) I realize that this wasn't the thrust of this thread, but wanted to quash this meme before it escapes. Of course, this is not to say that a GUI is not important.
