While we're at it, how difficult would it be for functions to return a value that can be used in other contexts? GMake has $(whatever ...) functions that can be used directly in strings. A lot of my translation code is lifting those things out of their strings and putting them on previous lines. Translations would be easier if people could just do what they're used to doing, in some analogous manner.
