Instead, set the INTERPROCEDURAL_OPTIMIZATION property on your target: http://www.cmake.org/cmake/help/cmake-2-8-docs.html#prop_tgt:INTERPROCEDURAL_OPTIMIZATION CMake will pass -ipo and use xilink as necessary.
