The only thing I might add to it would be something like the following:
# Only set EXIF_ROOT_DIR to the environment variable if

if ("${EXIF_ROOT_DIR}" STREQUAL "")
SET (EXIF_ROOT_DIR $ENV{EXIF_ROOT_DIR})
endif()
