Surely, the sole fact that it is possible to make a file read-only must mean 
that some people, at some point, must have thought that it was useful?… Anyway, 
in my case, it's very simple. I need to deploy files which I don't want my 
users to edit by mistake. Now, it's true that my users could always make the 
file writable, but then that's their 'responsibility'.
