Maybe CMAKE_<LANG>_SOURCE_FILE_EXTENSIONS would help with that.
For C++ this is e.g. CMAKE_CXX_SOURCE_FILE_EXTENSIONS set to
"C;M;c++;cc;cpp;cxx;m;mm;CPP".
