This turned out to work for me:
install (
DIRECTORY ${samples_SOURCE_DIR}
DESTINATION "src"
PATTERN "*.in" EXCLUDE
PATTERN ".gitignore" EXCLUDE
)
but lord help me, it took me the longest damn time.
