There is a simple solution to this problem?  Why are YOU, undoubtedly much higher paid than the MedRec person, doing the copying?  This is ajob the MR person needs to do on the day of admission, and to either place them in the chart, or in an easily accessible place which is available to staff 24 hours a day.  It is a Federal regulation.  Explain to the administrator that chasing all this paper is taking up a great deal of time, along w/ all that hole punching, and if we will NOT simply move the CURRENT records to the CURRENT chart, then the MR person needs to have it on the record w/i 24 hours. Complies with regulation and takes it off your plate.

Subject: MDS Medical Records

I am trying to keep the required last 15 month MDS assessments on the charts of readmitted residents. Medical records will not let me take the MDS out of the closed chart (from previous admission).  Is this the current medical record practice?  What does everyone else do?  I am trying to save myself the work of copying these assessments.    Thanks.
