I had to find a nsg home in Fla for my Mom and found reading the survey reports helpful. After I read them I asked myself "Is this something I could see at my nursing home where I know the care is good or not". The outcome was interesting. While my sister was easily swayed by the "visual" (new, stylish etc) I ended up very basic, we picked an older home and my Mom's care was exemplary. Also, Due to my parents financial status I mentioned to all that eventually she would be Medicaid and the immediate response from some was "interesting"-suddenly we were discussing waiting lists etc. Also, I asked what happened if the short term stay turned into permanent-would she stay or have to be moved. Another question that brought forth some interesting responses. One home actually stated "perhaps transfer within their corp which could be up to 100 miles" which was not feasible commute for Dad to visit. Also, listen carefully to the tour guide. I had one keep referring to the Alzheimers residents as "them" which was certainly offensive since this time "them" was my mom.

My neighbor called me last night from Pennsylvania in hopes that I would have some "insider" information on nursing homes in PA. I told him I had access to the greatest nursing home minds. People don't start thinking about nursing homes until they are forced to, and then it's a mad dash to figure out who's who. Thanks so much for the information! Have an awesome day!!!
