Good morning:

I have a dilemma that I hope someone can help me with.  I am the nurse manager of a  short term rehab unit in a nursing home. All of my nurses are nursing home nurses that have basically no acute care experience at all.  A couple do.

I am taking more and more complicated short term rehabs like S/P CABG's, AVR, BKA, dialysis, etc. as well as the standard ortho rehabs.

I need to do some major education of my nurses to teach them the basics of what to look for and how to properly assess and treat these resident's.

Due to an unfortunate death last week, the DON has FINALLY agreed to let me have an all RN staff that is CPR certified, as most are not.  She is also looking into getting me an AED and EKG machine.  I am also looking at doing IV's in the near future and I have already developed that program.

What I need and am looking for are some references, web sites or any other information you could provide to teach my nurses about sub acute nursing care.  Does anyone have an outline for an orientation program that they use for subacute care?

I appreciate it.
