If I need to use grace days to get my 5 days of rehab, I use grace days...... Unless it is only a 5 day. If its a 5 day, you only need to use your grace days if there is going to be @ least 500 min of rehab. Otherwise, the RUG is dependent on your Estimated minutes. When setting my ARD I try to consider weekneds and hoildys and work around them. If Rehab knows a week in advance of the ARD you want to use, then they need to get the minutes. If you set your ARD early in the assessment window and still don't get your minutes, you've got a little time to look at the ARD again, and might be able to use another ARD without going into your grace days. but again, if you need to use them to get your RUG, use them.

However, very often, in order to get the 5 days, I have to use grace days (gd). I use the gd because the resident did not get admitted to our TCU early on the day of admission or had a skilled need and could not participate in therapy right away, or no therapy on Sunday, etc. Sometimes I use all 8 days as the look back period and still only have 3 or 4 days of therapy minutes to use in Sect. P. I know that gd are only to be used sparingly. I don't know which is more important - use of grace days or 5 days of therapy. What is the accepted protocol to follow in this situation? /---------------------------------------------------------- The Case Mix Discussion Group is a free service of the American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordinators "Committed to the Assessment Professional" Be sure to visit the AANAC website.
