A lot of facilities per policy or with physician's orders have dressings
on the peg sites. This does not automatically mean that it is a
surgical wound. Fresh sites may be a surgical wound. I would use my
assessment skills to determine when healing has occurred and then no
longer code it as a surgical wound.

Subject: tube site-surg. wound?

We have a few residents with g-tubes who recieve
bacitracin with a dressing to site. For how long
should we be coding them as a surgical site? As long
as there's a need for a dressing? As long as they're
on medicare? Indefinitely?

Thanx in advance
Jennifer RN BSN MDS Coordinator
