Subject: ambulance services- off MDS/PPS subject

I have a question that is off the subject, but I know alot of us have to perform duties as hall supervisors, so I would like your opinions...   Here, every time we receive an order to send a resident to the ER the charge nurse will begin to question "should they go by ambulance or should we call the family to take them?". I have been told this is because the family may have to pay for the trip.  I have a problem with this because I will be sending the resident to the ER due to an acute situation, and the family does not have the ability to monitor or treat any problems that may arise.  I feel the wise choice is to call an ambulance when you have an MD order to send to the ER.  For instance I have a resident who fell early this am and had no visible signs of injury but is now c/o back pain. I contacted the MD who stated "send to ER for X-Ray & treatment". I did not feel comfortable sending someone with a possible fracture in a personal vehicle. What is your opinions?
