I just did a search about this last year. Most references use the as needed protocol.
I checked three fundamentals of nursing texts, and the texts either did not address
changing catheters, or the reason given was for blockage or leakage. APIC(association
of professionals in infection control) manual does not address this directly,but also
discusses limiting the number of times a catheter is placed to decrease the source of
infection. Also check the manufactorer's recommendations. Our product manufacturor's
recommendations for the foley collection bag was "when needed due to discoloration".
A literature search turned up a few articles on infection rates based on the frequency
of changes.
